One World Media Awards Ceremony Production at BAFTA, London

Turning a cinema theatre into a live awards production environment

The One World Media Awards recognise outstanding journalism and filmmaking from around the world, celebrating work that brings important international stories and under-reported issues to wider audiences.

Comtec supported the Awards for more than a decade as a Major Partner, providing the technical and creative production required to deliver an awards ceremony dealing with serious and often emotional subjects while still creating an occasion that celebrated exceptional journalism and filmmaking.

One of the distinctive challenges was the venue itself: the theatre at BAFTA headquarters in London.

The Challenge

The BAFTA theatre was designed first and foremost for screening major films.

It was not designed around the requirements of a multi-camera live awards ceremony.

Conventional camera positions in the aisles would have restricted movement and taken up valuable audience space, while the production still needed live coverage of presenters and winners alongside award graphics, nominee content and high-quality projected imagery.

The challenge was therefore to create a polished awards production within the limitations of the existing theatre rather than compromising the room to accommodate the technology.

The Comtec Solution

Comtec designed a camera and presentation system specifically around the venue.

Remote-controlled cameras were used instead of conventional manned video cameras in the theatre aisles, allowing the production to capture live stage footage without obstructing audience areas.

For each award category, Comtec created a fully animated digital sequence containing the category content, with separate cues for nominees and winners.

Those sequences were integrated with the live camera coverage using an HD vision mixer, allowing the production to move between live presenters, winners and prepared award content as the ceremony progressed.

Making the Theatre Part of the Production

The theatre’s principal visual surface became an important part of the awards environment.

A specialist water-cooled high-definition video projector was used to create a large, bright image across the full rear wall of the stage area.

Rather than introducing additional screens that would compete with the architecture of the theatre, the projection allowed the existing presentation environment to become part of the show.

The combination of large-format imagery, animated award content and live camera coverage gave the ceremony a strong visual identity while respecting the constraints of the venue.

Content, Cameras and Cues Working Together

An awards ceremony depends heavily on timing.

Every category involved a sequence of prepared content, nominee information, the winner announcement and live coverage from the theatre.

The individual technologies were important, but the production depended on bringing them together at exactly the right moment.

Animated content, live cameras, projection and vision mixing were therefore treated as one coordinated production rather than separate technical services.

That approach allowed each award to move naturally from introduction through nomination to the winner’s moment.

A Serious Subject and a Celebration

The One World Media Awards often recognise journalism and filmmaking dealing with difficult and emotional subjects.

The production therefore needed to respect the importance of the work while still creating the atmosphere of an awards ceremony celebrating exceptional achievement.

For one of the events, the ceremony was hosted by Jon Snow, the long-serving Channel 4 News presenter, who came directly from the ITN studios to host the evening.

The balance between serious storytelling and recognition was central to the character of the event.

A Partnership Lasting More Than a Decade

Comtec’s involvement with the One World Media Awards developed into a relationship lasting more than ten years, during which Comtec was proud to support the event as a Major Partner.

Long-term relationships like this provide something beyond familiarity with the equipment.

They create an understanding of the event, the organisation, the audience and what the production is trying to achieve.

That understanding helps the technology become part of the event rather than the thing the audience notices.

The Result

The production transformed a prestigious cinema theatre into an effective live awards environment without compromising the character or practical use of the venue.

Remote cameras solved the limited camera-position problem, while animated award sequences, live vision mixing and large-format projection combined to give nominees, winners and their work the visual prominence the occasion required.

It demonstrates a principle that still guides Comtec’s production approach today:

Understand the environment first. Then design the technology around it.
