National Union of Teachers Annual Conference 2010
The National Union of Teachers was established at a meeting at King's College London on 25th June 1870 as the National Union of Elementary Teachers (NUET) to represent all school teachers in England and Wales. After toying with the idea of changing the name to the National Union of English Teachers the name National Union of Teachers (NUT) was finally adopted at Annual Conference in April 1889. The National Union of Teachers is now the largest teachers’ union in England and Wales.
The Union organises an Annual Conference where members come together to share ideas and debate policy. This is an important forum for the Union’s democratic process and public image. While it is a closed event for members and invited guests only (some of whom are senior members of government) the Conference receives wide media attention, including television coverage. It usually appears on prime time television news and current affairs.
The 2009 conference was held over the Easter weekend at St David’s Hall, Cardiff and marked the 139th conference of the NUT. After a successful tender process in late 2009, Comtec were once again appointed as the stage set and AV contractor for the 2010 event.
The stage set design had to reflect the Union’s role as a major, forward-looking, professional organisation. With the conference running for 5 days it must also be visually attractive, innovative and be conceived in the context of televised images being appropriately clear and prestigious. It must also be functional and include a formal top table for 16 people and allow space for a second row of tables and chairs and a signer.
Karen Handley of the NUT stated that "a key factor for the Union is the ingenuity of the stage design. We are keen to see fresh designs that are both functional and eye catching and this year we achieved this in abundance."
Our winning design included many key points of differentiation. Innovative and forward thinking we projected moving animations of school images onto the set. These images were changed daily, rotating between NUT2010 and WELCOME.
Innovative and forward thinking again the screen itself used picture in picture technology to include 4 layers. The background; live camera shots of the president, the delegation or the main lectern; the signer and the motion number and speakers name.
A key consideration for the NUT is disabled access. Ramped access to the rostrum, installation of induction loops, audience microphones positioned in areas wide enough for wheelchair users. The rostrum was a purpose built rise and fall lectern, fully controllable from front of house. As a side issue it also contained a traffic light system which indicated how much time each speaker had remaining.
The conference itself is very much a live event, run by the union’s members. They dictate the agenda and speakers hand in cards literally minutes before they speak on stage. This requires an experienced professional crew who can call a live show whilst the world watches on. The event is covered by all the UK’s major news channels Sky News, BBC, and ITN all require feeds and with key issues like the boycotting of SATs and taking a stand against the BNP this years conference was extremely newsworthy.
Outside of the main conference hall Comtec were also responsible for the production of the National Press office and two fringe meetings. Providing large relay monitors in the National Press office, Conference Office and The Teacher magazine office; and, post event providing a complete audio visual recording of the entire proceedings on DVD.
